The Arms’ Keepers: The Medieval Heralds

Saturday 23 October 2021, 2.00PM to 5.00pm

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD

Coats of arms were displayed by medieval knights so that they could be identified and recognised. Only heralds knew all the arms in the realm and abroad; therefore, they were responsible for identifying prisoners and the dead after every battle. Owing to their particular knowledge, they lent their name to the study of coats of arms: heraldry. This course will provide an introduction to the role of medieval heralds and will explore the origins of heraldry.
