Heraldry: Emblazoning the Kingdom

Saturday 6 November 2021, 2.00PM to 5.00pm

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD

How did the Three Lions become the Arms of England? What is the motto of the Arms of Scotland? Coats of arms are 900-year-old devices first displayed on medieval shields, banners and seals. Many towns, universities and guilds still make use of arms today, as a sign of sovereignty or corporate identity. This course will explore the language and symbolism of heraldry (study of coats of arms). It will also study the manner in which arms have evolved within dynasties throughout the centuries.
