William the Conqueror, the Conquest of York, and the Harrying of the North (second cohort)

In 1066 William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings, but this was only the beginning of the conquest of England. In 1069 York was ravaged by invasions from Scandinavia and rose in rebellion against the Normans. William the Conqueror retaliated viciously, Harrying the North, slaughtering livestock and burning seedcorn, and built a second castle in the city of York. This course will examine the Norman conquest of York, the Harrying of the North and the impact of the conquest on the city.
