The Rise of the Normans: Southern Italy and the Holy Land

The Normans played a major role in European Medieval history. They became Dukes of Apulia, Kings of Sicily, and Princes of Antioch. This course will study the Norman conquest of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily, and their participation in the First Crusade. It will consider textual, visual, and architectural evidence and focus on the political, military and cultural changes that they brought to their new dominions.
