Damascus (Syria): A Tribute to the ‘City of Jasmine’

Saturday 5 June 2021, 10.00AM to 1.15pm

Speaker(s): Roberta Marin BA MA

In recent years, Syria has been on the spotlight not for the beauty of its artistic heritage but for the civil war that has divided the country. In order not to forget Damascus and its multilayered history, we will analyse the development of Islamic art and architecture in the city. Damascus was the first capital of the Islamic world and was ruled by the powerful Umayyads (661-750), who were great patrons of the arts and commissioned the Great Mosque (706-15).
