The Ascendancy of Mercia during the eighth century is mostly due to a remarkable king: Offa. His military achievements match those in diplomacy, trade and government. This course will explore the history of Mercia, in the 8th century, especially focusing on King Offa. Studying surviving documents and archaeological finds, the course will aim to create a portrait of the times when the Mercian kings ruled as overlords in England.
