Reformation on the Record: exploring the Reformation through documentary sources

Wednesday 20 January 2021, 7.00PM to 9.00 PM

Speaker(s): Marianne Wilson

The Reformation transformed the nature of English society and made a bold statement about the changing relationship between the Church and the State. This module introduces some key themes in the history of the English Reformation, including the influence of Europe, the Break with Rome, the role of key figures such as Thomas Cromwell, the Dissolution of the monasteries, the Pilgrimage of Grace and other rebellions and the impact on popular religion and commemoration. Using digital copies of original documents from local and national archives, alongside translations, the participants will consider different types of evidence that can shed light on these themes.
