In many ways Dvořák’s wide-ranging music for orchestra stands as a synthesis of the whole spectrum of 19th century orchestral works, well beyond a purely Czech tradition. Alongside his masterly nine symphonies, he wrote three important concertos, five symphonic poems, seven concert overtures, besides Symphonic Variations, a Czech Suite and a Scherzo Capriccioso. His Stabat Mater and Mass in D partner St Ludmilla among his large-scale choral works. The course will attempt to distil the essence of his genius.
