Painted Words, Written Images

Thursday 21 January 2021, 7.00PM to 9.00 PM

Speaker(s): Tom Bromwell

The connection between the verbal and visual has been fundamental to the history of several academic disciplines, and a continuous theme of literary and art historical thought. Yet why are words and images so often placed at odds with one another? And how do they influence each other? This course will study encounters between verbal and visual languages from the Renaissance to present. We will explore examples from book illustrations and the artist’s approach to literary texts to literary responses to works of visual art, and discover how the relationship between words and images has impacted upon and shaped our culture.
