The Poetry of Hull

Saturday 13 February 2021, 10.00AM to 1.15PM

Speaker(s): Stephen Grace

Hull’s literary pedigree stretches back to the seventeenth century and Andrew Marvell, who was born near the city and served as its Member of Parliament. The city especially flourished in the late twentieth-century when poets such as Philip Larkin, Stevie Smith, Douglas Dunn, and Sean O’Brien invoked it in their work. This course will examine these writers, as well exploring some other, less-heralded Hull poets, and test Peter Porter’s contention that it is ‘the most poetic city in England’.
