The Benedictine Order and their Monasteries in Northern England

From Monkwearmouth / Jarrow to Whitby and from Durham to St Mary’s in York, the Benedictine Order exercised influence and enjoyed prestige. Between the 7th and the 15th centuries, Benedictine monasteries became integral part of the social, economic, and cultural landscape. This course will explore the history of Benedictine monasteries in Northern England, from their foundation all through their age of splendour. The course will study both the monastic buildings and the lives of medieval monks, nuns, and donors.
