George IV, York, and the Slave Trade (second cohort)

Saturday 20 March 2021, 10.00AM to 1.00pm

Speaker(s): Gillian Waters

Discover the story behind the visit of George IV to York as Prince Regent in 1789 and the entertainments which the city provided for him. George IV promised to send his portrait to the city, which finally arrived in York in 1811. This was the year that the Slave Trade Felony Act made engagement in the slave trade a felony for the first time. This course explores the direct and indirect links between the city of York, the slave trade and the anti-slavery movement.
