Art and the Female Body

Saturday 27 March 2021, 2.00PM to 5:00 PM

Speaker(s): Karen Brett

For some art historians the representation of the female body can be interpreted in a binary fashion: women could be virtuous, or they could be immoral. This course will examine different ways in which the female body has been portrayed throughout history. Together we will explore highlights such as Ancient Greek nudes, medieval saints and sinners, Early Modern portraits of Elizabeth I and Pre-Raphaelite femme fatales. Can these representations be connected to attitudes towards women within society at that time?
