After the southern kingdoms exercised overlordship in sixth-century England, Northumbrian kings rose to power, helped in part by political marriages. This course will study the socio-cultural and military aspects behind the rise of the powerful Northumbrian ‘Bretwalda’ (Edwin, Oswald and Oswiu), during the seventh century. Both documentary evidence and archaeological findings will be considered.
This course will be delivered via Zoom. Students joining our online courses would need access to a computer, laptop or tablet with a microphone (essential) and a webcam (desirable) as well as a reliable broadband connection.
