Alcuin of York and Charlemagne

Alcuin of York was Master at York Minster when Charlemagne invited him to lead a revolutionary programme at his court, playing a main role in the revival of studies.  A prolific writer, Alcuin produced theological and dogmatic treatises, grammar works, and poems. Charlemagne’s biographer called him ‘The most learned man anywhere to be found’. This course will explore the achievements of Alcuin at Charlemagne’s court, where he became a major architect of the Carolingian Renaissance.
