An Introduction to Flemish and Belgian Art

This course introduces students to the art of Belgium, from Jan van Eyck, the ‘father of oil painting’, all the way to Tintin. Artists in focus include the Flemish Primitives; Pieter Brueghel I; Rubens, Van Dyck and the Flemish Baroque; Victor Horta and James Ensor; René Magritte; and Hergé and the bande dessinée. Focusing on Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels, students will be introduced to the history of the region, encompassing the Renaissance, the Napoleonic Wars and the Belgian Congo.
