Medieval Bestsellers: Chaucer and Boccaccio

Saturday 28 November 2020, 10.00AM to 1:00PM

Popularity of medieval texts is measured by the number of its surviving manuscripts: by this measure, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Boccaccio’s Decameron were medieval ‘best sellers’. Did Chaucer base his Tales on the Decameron? What evidence can we find in the texts themselves? This course will study the historical relevance of Chaucer’s Tales and its connection with the Decameron. Discussion will include historical context and passages of the two books.
