Anglo-Saxon kings who exercised overlordship over neighbouring kingdoms were called ‘Bretwalda’ by Bede. This course will study early Bretwalda: the kings of Kent, Sussex, who ruled during the sixth century. By exploring documentary evidence and archaeological findings, this course aims to understand life in these early kingdoms. It will address questions such as: who were the first Saxons to arrive in Britain?
