The French filmmaker Agnès Varda (1928-2019) had one of the most eclectic and distinguished careers in cinema history. Known as the ‘grandmother of the French New Wave’, her early films had a profound influence on directors such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. In later life, she received huge acclaim for a series of lyrical and introspective documentaries. In this course we will watch and discuss four of Varda’s most notable films from different stages in her illustrious career.
