Accent and Discrimination in the British Isles

Tuesday 21 January 2020, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

In this course, we’ll look at the variation of a range of accents spoken across the British Isles, including regional accents, as well as how speech differs between younger and older people. From this baseline, we’ll consider the idea of ‘accent discrimination’ and its implications for day-to-day interactions. These interactions include how accents might be discriminated against during job interviews, or by juries presiding over witness testimony in a courtroom setting.
