An Introduction to Planetary Science

Wednesday 2 October 2019, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

Opening with an overview of solar system formation and evolution, we will explore the huge variety of exotic environments within our own Solar System. We will then broaden our scope to discussions of planets around other stars; how do we detect these ‘exo-planets’ and what information can we glean about their physical characteristics? Finally, we will discuss the conditions that allowed life to develop on Earth and the possibility of finding other similar environments elsewhere. This is an introductory course, so no prior physics or maths experience is needed.
