Film music exists in the background, supporting an on-screen story. But it is also one of the most powerful cinematic tools for experiencing emotion. This course explores the functions of film music, its processes and devices. Our relationship with it is complex: some scores hold their own musical identity, whilst film is also the medium through which many people experience contemporary composition techniques. To navigate this creative and functional trade, this course will trace music from the 'Golden Age' of cinema to Ennio Morricone and John Williams.
