Mendelssohn has not always enjoyed the reputation he deserves. But his music was seen by Nietzsche as the vital link between Beethoven and Wagner among German composers. This course - like its counterpart next term - sets out to show why. His early piano quartets, the sensational octet, the six string quartets and two piano trios prove that his chamber music covers a startling range of styles and emotions. His scintillating keyboard music shows the influence of Bach, Beethoven and Weber.
