Hark the Herald Angels Sing: The Development of Christmas Carols

Saturday 14 December 2019, 10.00AM to 4.30pm

Whilst many of today’s most popular Christmas carols are taken from the Victorian period, carols have actually existed since the dawn of Christianity. They began as pagan Winter Solstice songs, developed to be sung in Nativity plays and by travelling minstrels and waits, became church hymns, were collected into Victorian carol collections, and have even been remixed into modern pop songs. This course will therefore explore this history and evolution, and will be interspersed with informal traditional carol singing.
