From Bowler Hats to Circular Breathing: The Evolution of British Jazz

Saturday 26 October 2019, 10.00AM to 4.30pm

Although jazz boasts black American roots, the UK has played a key role in expanding the idioms of the music. Stereotype images of amateurs playing copycat trad jazz in smoky pubs is far from the true picture of British jazz. From Stan Tracey, Joe Harriot and Mike Westbrook, to Evan Parker, Soft Machine and the Brotherhood of Breath, British jazz is prolific and innovative. The course will explore the diversity of home-grown jazz styles, sampling a wide range of recordings and exploring their social and historical contexts.
