In conventional 1950s America, a new breed of young experimental writers were beginning to make their voices heard. With the publication of Allen Ginsberg’s Howl, Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and William Burroughs’ Naked Lunch, the USA began to face a rising backlash against conservative values, one which evolved into the radical politics and alternative lifestyles of the 1960s. Reading extracts from a range of 'Beat' writers of the period, the course will show how literature played a key role in changing the consciousness of a generation.
