This course will aim to provide a psychoanalytical approach to Bram Stoker’s epistolary novel Dracula, by drawing largely on the theory of the philosopher Julia Kristeva. We will explore concepts such as the uncanny, the fear of the self-expressed as the fear of the other, or the ‘foreigner’, sexual desire and repression, and attempt to unpack the way in which these are at play in the intricate symbolism of the novel.
