Malignant ogres, fairies and stepmothers: the monstrous in fairy tales does more than give the reader a good fright. The representation of evil and its consequences is as much about social and cultural fears as individual ones, expressing anxieties and (maybe) banishing them. The fear of powerful females, of inappropriate desire, of loss and death are all part of the monster’s arsenal. This course will listen to the monsters, their victims and vanquishers and consider what they tell us about our deepest fears.
