2019 marks the two hundredth anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester, when a peaceful crowd, assembled in favour of political reform, was mown down by armed yeomanry. Around 18 people were killed, and many hundreds injured. We will look at a range of written responses produced in the aftermath of Peterloo, including extracts from memoirs, journalism, satire, songs, and poetry - and not forgetting what is probably the most famous piece of 'Peterloo literature': Percy Shelley’s The Masque of Anarchy.
