British Art in the 1950s

Saturday 1 February 2020, 10.00AM to 4.30pm

Britain redefined itself culturally in many ways in the 1950s. War had cut short the explorations of modernist artists of the 1930s but they had set up bases for the cultural establishment to remodel itself in ‘contemporary’ terms. We will focus on members of the Independent Group, the Festival of Britain and the rise of popular culture, the sculpture of the Venice Biennale 1952 and abstract painting. We will also explore how far artists interconnect with wider international trends.
