Who was William the Conqueror?

Saturday 15 February 2020, 10.00AM to 4.30pm

At about seven year of age, William became the Duke of Normandy; he would become King of England in 1066. His life was marked with constant fighting but also with monastic building. This course will study the chronicles (both Norman and Anglo-Saxon) and the visual evidence from the time of the Conqueror to elucidate who he was. Was he the just, generous hero depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry? Or the cruel, calculating murderer of the Harrying of the North?
