‘The greatest transformation in the history of the world’ took place in Britain and marked the watershed between the medieval and the modern world. Often thought of only as technological change, it was much more: a series of social, political, economic and cultural revolutions that affected every aspect of life from work, leisure, families, clothing, class, civic rights, to the arts. The course will investigate a variety of aspects of a world that began with turnips and top hats and ended with trams and typewriters. No previous knowledge required.
