The Enlightenment: A Crash Course (second cohort)

The European Enlightenment created the foundations of modern thought - the rise of reason over superstition, ideas of liberty, equality and tolerance in political thought, rationality in science and the arts, and politeness in public behaviour. It coincided with increasing urbanisation and global exploration. This whistle-stop tour through the eighteenth century will consider writings of philosophers, novelists, scientists and social commentators. We may question what happened to these hopes of progress, improvement and public virtue. No previous knowledge required.
