The ‘Black and Tans’ were the brainchild of Winston Churchill: 10,000 veterans of the Great War, recruited to defeat the growing threat from the separatist IRA and reassert British authority in Ireland. However they quickly became notorious, hated by the majority of the Irish population and reviled even by the British Army and Press. But were the Black and Tans really the monsters of nationalist propaganda? How close did they come to fulfilling their purpose? What was their legacy for Anglo-Irish relations?
