Medieval feasting was a theatrical ceremony. Food alternated with entertainment, where jugglers, mummers, and minstrels performed while the audiences indulged in colourful, tasty food. This course will explore the splendours of medieval celebrations as popular festivals: from Twelfth Night to Midsummer’s Eve, from April Fools’ and May Day to St Swithin’s Day and Halloween. It will study how specific food, costumes, and music were linked to each festival, until they became traditional.
