Is there an ‘Historical Drama’ genre? From award-winning blockbusters to Sunday night television, royal biopic to ‘period’ crime, history appears on screen in multiple and diverse forms often amidst controversy surrounding the balance of authentic re-creation and fictive creation. Considering examples from cinematic biopic to long-running open-ended ‘soap-operas’ such as Call the Midwife or Downton Abbey, to adapting classics like Austen or Shakespeare, this course will offer a chance to explore and debate the tension between authenticity and entertainment.
