Behind the Front Door: A Glimpse into York's Social History

Tuesday 21 January 2020, 1.00PM to 3.00pm

This course will examine aspects of York's social history through a focused study into the lives of families who lived in the Holgate area. Using original records, we will explore their backgrounds, their housing, their family networks, their occupations and their leisure activities. Following them through several generations, we will gain a fascinating insight into the lives of York's Victorian residents and an understanding of the social and cultural factors which influenced their lives. It is anticipated that the final week of the course will be a walking tour of the Holgate area. Students will be expected to make their own way to the agreed meeting point.
