An Unquiet Peace: Europe (1918-23)

Saturday 25 January 2020, 1.30PM to 4.30pm

The Armistice of 11 November 1918 ended the Great War, but not the many ‘small wars’ that proliferated in its aftermath. This course will attempt to understand the context and causes of these conflicts. To what extent were the flawed peace settlements to blame? Did the collapse of the Russian, Ottoman and Russian empires make instability inevitable? Or was endemic warfare rooted in more ancient ethnic and religious enmities? And what were the short- and long-term consequences?
