The late fifteenth to the mid-seventeenth century was an important period in the development of education in England, witnessing the foundation of grammar schools across the country, providing a Latin education to boys of middling social status: many of these institutions survive today. We will examine their foundation, curricula, students and teachers, as well as the experience of attending them and their function within English society, against the historical backdrop of renaissance humanism and religious reformation.
