September 1939: A Not Unexpected War?

Saturday 9 November 2019, 1.30PM to 4.30pm

According to AJP Taylor 'men’s minds [in 1939] were prepared for war, though not necessarily for the war which actually happened.' 80 years on we will examine the extent to which the Second World War was the consequence of unresolved issues from the Great War. Why did the invasion of Poland trigger a wider conflict? Did the rise of Hitler to power in 1933 make war inevitable? And what blame should be attached to Stalin and the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain?
