Rome and Byzantium: Everyday Life in the Imperial Cities

From the beginning of the Roman Empire in the West to the decline of Byzantium in the East some 1,500 years later, the identity of Rome experienced continuous transformation. Rome and Byzantium can be studied as two stages in the history of the same empire, or as two versions of Rome, each with its own philosophy, ideology, and language. This course will explore what everyday life was like in the two imperial capitals of the Roman Empire.
