Opium Wars, Unequal Treaties, Gunboats and Rebellions: Britain and China (1685-1949)

How did China regard the first Britons to arrive? What was the ‘Canton System’ and what were its commodities? Which Chinese leader believed he was the brother of Christ, and with what consequences for China? Which Chinese ruler described Britons in Peking as ‘all one family’ but consented to their deaths? What was ‘Extraterritoriality’ and what were its origins? This course will study British activity in China between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, from early Chinese restrictions on trade and residence to the forced opening up of the Celestial Empire.
