Germany, as we know it today, was only founded in 1871. Over the following seventy-eight years this new nation built an empire, became an industrial behemoth, lost two world wars, committed genocide, and - ultimately - was divided in two. This course will provide an overview of the passage of German history during this crucial period and introduce students to the major historical debates as to the distinctiveness (or otherwise) of the nation’s development up to 1949.
