From Friend to Foe: Byzantium and Venice (c.900-c.1300)

Monday 30 September 2019, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

Venice today displays some of the most beautiful and significant survivals of Byzantine art: the mosaics of the cathedral of San Marco and the churches of the island of Torcello; the precious objects in the cathedral treasury and the sculpture adorning its buildings. This course will examine, with the help of contemporary documents from both Venice and Byzantium, the nature of the association between the two states, and how this developed in the spheres of diplomacy, economic relations and art.
