A Mad World: An Introduction to the Cultural History of Madness and Mental Health in Britain

From medieval mystics to the lunatic asylum, from Victorian ideas of hysteria to victims of shellshock, the understanding of mental illness has a long and changing history in the UK. This day course will offer an overview of how mental illness was treated and represented in British culture, from early understandings to the post-war period and consider the legacy of these interpretations today.
