Philosophies of Literature: Aesthetics, Politics and Pleasure

Thursday 3 October 2019, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

The study of literature has evolved dramatically in recent years, encompassing a wide range of theoretical approaches. This module will examine a number of these advances including feminism, postcolonialism, eco-criticism and psychoanalysis, and explore how the concepts enlighten our interpretation of classic literature. By engaging with a diversity of texts, including stories by Virginia Woolf, James Joyce and Charlotte Bronte, Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Shelley’s poetry, the aim of the module is to develop critical confidence and a deeper understanding of how literature gives pleasure.
