This event is part of the project / event series ‘How can teachers in Japanese language education help learners to develop their communication competence?’ developed and organised by Megumi Bailey (Associate Lecturer in Japanese, Dept. Language and Linguistic Science). The project has been awarded a grant from the Japan Foundation, London

The event is the first workshop-style seminar in the series and will take place on Sunday 11 April  2021 at 12.00 (GMT) via Zoom. 

Seminar 2. 「対話」って、何? - What is “Dialogue”?

At our first seminar we experienced and observed the Oral Japanese Assessment Europe (OJAE) assessment method at A2 and B2 levels led by the OJAE team. Through this unique assessment style we were provoked to reflect on and consider our conventional oral assessments.

With the special support of the OJAE team the participants will be encouraged to consider and discuss how ‘dialogue’ is developed through reflecting on their experience from the previous seminar. This seminar aims to help to deepen our understanding of dialogue.

To enhance our understanding of the OJAE approach, a set of preliminary tasks for this seminar are deposited together with a series of videos illustrating the key concepts of CEFR-CV (2018).

お話で説明を伺ったり、資料で読んだものとは違い、試験者と受験者の二つの立場を良く把握することができました。

Unlike studying text based resources, this experience helped me observe assessment in action.  This proved valuable in grasping the perspectives of both examiner and examinee.

今回のような規模・濃度のセミナーに無料で参加できること、改めて大変有難い機会だと思いました。また、先生がセミナー最初に発してくれたメッセージは、「セミナーで発言する」ことの難度をぐっと下げてくださいましたし、先生が参加者の発言を聞く際の態度(常に笑顔、深い頷き)は、参加する側全員の心理的安全性を高めるものだったと思います。セミナー後の、細々とした配慮も含め、非常に感謝しております。

This was a great opportunity to participate in a seminar of such scale and depth - and free of charge, too! In addition, the ground rules for participation at the start of the seminar greatly reduced the hurdles to sharing our opinions at the seminar. Furthermore, the hosts mannerisms and attitude to listen to the participants produced a great learning environment where we felt comfortable contributing.

I am very grateful for the attention to detail, even following the conclusion of the seminar.


The seminar is for all Japanese language educators in the UK and beyond. It will be conducted in Japanese.
