Things to consider

Together you and the relevant Research Coordinator will discuss what is required to get your research project done.  You'll need to have a general idea of the workplan for the project, but it’s ok if your resource requirements change as you develop the proposal.

Below is a list of what you might include in your project budget.  The list is by no means comprehensive, and bear in mind that particular funders will have restrictions on what you can include; you may not be able to ask for everything you think you need.

  • how much time you as Principal Investigator (PI) will spend on the project
  • thow much time your Co-Investigators (CIs) will spend on the project
  • if requesting funding for replacement teaching, how long and at what grade (check with your department if you’re not sure)
  • research assistant(s)
  • PhD student(s) - generally costed at rate set by RCUK though some funders like the Wellcome Trust provide more generous stipends
  • admin assistance - invaluable for the smooth running of larger projects
  • travel – project meetings, research trips, conference attendance etc.
  • hosting a conference – catering, publicity, travel for key notes speakers etc.
  • costs for impact activities
  • website costs
  • equipment, i.e. specialist laptop, camera, recorders
  • consumables, i.e. stationery
  • publication costs
  • advertising costs, i.e. posters, flyers
  • copyright fees and image reproduction costs
