PhD student awarded Santander International Connections Award

Posted on 24 May 2013

PhD student Lyndsey Smith has won a Santander International Connections Award (2013) for a forthcoming research trip to Germany and Russia.

Competition was fierce, with over 60 grant applications submitted, only 21 of which were awarded funding, so many congratulations to Lyndsey.

Lyndsey will be travelling to visit museums in Munich, Berlin, Cologne, Schloss Harburg, and St Petersburg in order to photograph, measure, handle and study their Anglo-Saxon ivories. Through this first hand study, Lyndsey hopes to produce a catalogue which provides an overview of the ivories of Anglo-Saxon England, which are the focus of her doctoral thesis. In doing so, Lyndsey hopes to shed light on the cultural, social, economic and artistic importance of this small but vital group of early medieval art.
