Midwifery Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors

As members of the Midlands Yorkshire, North East and East of England Practice Learning Group (MYNEEPLG), which consists of 32 Approved Educational Institutions and our many NHS, Private, Independent and Voluntary practice partners, we are proud to have been part of the largest collaboration, responding the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Education Standards (2018).

In addition to the development of the Midlands, Yorkshire and East Practice Assessment Document (MYEPAD), to be used by all midwifery students undertaking Future Nurse Curricula, the group has produced resources to support the transition of existing mentors under SLAiP (NMC 2008) to the New Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment in Practice (SSSA) (NMC 2018). These resources have been adapted by te university of York to suit the needs of the midwifery profession.

Locally, the University of York Practice Learning environments are shared with the Universities of Hull and Coventry. Therefore we have engaged in the regional work undertaken to develop preparatory materials for both Mentor to Practice Assessor & Supervisor Transition and Practice Supervisor Preparation. For those supervisors who wish to upskill to the practice assessor role, the Practice Assessor Preparation (PAP) course is currently being adapted to suit the requirements of the midwifery profession and will be available soon. More information about all of these resources can be found in the practice assessors and supervisors section.

Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors

'Due to COVID-19 in March 2020, the NMC asked all universities delivering midwifery programmes to implement the SSSA with immediate effect. This means that all midwives who were previously sign-off mentors will now be either a Practice Assessor or a Practice Supervisor. These standards have permanently replaced the SLAiP standards. The online training packages for PA/PS have been adapted for any midwives who are involved in supervising student midwives'.

Mentor to Practice Assessor & Supervisor Transition

Practice Assessor and Supervisor transition training is required for staff that have undertaken a previous mentorship qualification. The PAN Midlands, Yorkshire, North East and East Practice Learning Group (MYNEE PLG) have developed an online training package to support your transition training and this will now replace the face-to-face sessions.

Following completion of the training package your knowledge will be assessed via a quiz. A pass rate of 80% or above is required to obtain your certificate. Failure to submit your certificate will mean that you are not recorded as a Practice Assessor.

To access the Mentor to Practice Assessor and Supervisor training, please see Workbook for transition midwifery mentors to practice supervisor/assessor roles (MS Word , 404kb)
